Hey Disney Fans!
Last year Disney started a summer virtual running series and I am so excited to see that they are doing it again this year. Mostly because I missed the sign up last year and I really wanted to try it. This summer series consists of three 5k’s and runs between June 1-Aug 31.
First things first, what’s a virtual race? Virtual races have been growing in popularity over the last few years.
The idea is simple:
- Sign up, like you would for any other race.
- The race takes place on a specific day or over a set time frame (ie. any day on a long weekend).
- Complete the distance any way you want.
Literally, you pick the route, run with whomever you want, whatever time of day you want, however fast or slow you want. Go run your awesome personalized race. Then, you get a medal for running a virtual race.
Sometimes when you register you get a shirt, a bib or other swag. It’s based on the honor system. You don’t have to send in pictures or proof of time. Sign up, run or walk (honor system), and you get sent a medal after the designated date to run.
Who Should Run the Virtual Races
Virtual races are absolutely perfect for anyone! Beginner or seasoned runner, it doesn’t matter, make it as fun as you’d like. I’ve done several with my kiddos who love to run, but aren’t quite old enough to trust among the crowds of organized 5K’s yet. We’ve mostly done it as a way to celebrate holidays with the kids.
The Bonus of Running Virtual Races
The best part, aside from doing something super healthy for yourself and the social aspect of doing it with friends & family, is you get a medal for it. What can I say, I like shiny things. In the case of the Disney races….the medals are super super cool! This summer series gives you a chance to earn 4 medals! You get one medal for each 5K, but if you run all three, they will send you a commemorative fourth medal to celebrate your accomplishments.
It’s almost that time again! Registration for the #runDisneyShorts opens in April! Learn more about this event: https://t.co/SaQ6eCoUYG pic.twitter.com/G3DSvSo0Bh

Cost
Now given that it’s Disney, the races cost a little more then normal virtual races. Each race is $39 or you can pay $142 for all three races and the special commemorative medal.
How to Sign Up
To sign up you will need to go to www.rundisney.com. The registration date on the website is listed as Spring 2017. However, I received an email last week saying that registration would open April 11th. My advice, keep checking, and check often. Races like this sell out fast. There are not a lot of details about the virtual series yet on the website, but I am expecting to see more information coming out soon.
Have Fun With It
Be sure to show off your Disney side a little if you do the virtual races. I plan on wearing my mouse ears for at least one of them. Or if you’re thinking about dressing up for a longer race, a 5K might be a great way to try out a costume. Some running costume tips: make sure it doesn’t chaff, make sure it holds together and is comfortable. :0) You get the idea.
We well keep you updated as more information is released.
Are you planning on running the virtual shorts?
