The other day I posted the above picture asking for guesses as to where the lamp is located. As usual, there were some great guesses and some people got it right!
The lamp is located in the first scene of the Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom. The first scene is supposed to take place at the turn of the 20th century and the lamp looks like one of those old hurricane lamps from that time period. In the scene the lamp is on a table to the right of John, the narrator.
The Carousel of Progress consists of four different scenes at different times throughout the past 100 years or so. During each era, John discusses the new technological advances that have been made that make their lives more convenient. It’s a classic show and a great option when you need to get off your feet, because the show lasts for 21 minutes. Plus, there’s a cool feature about the theater, it revolves. So as one scene ends, guests are rotated to the next scene.
Different Scenes:
- Spring at the Turn of the 20th Century – Gas lamps, hand-cranked washing machine, and a gramophone are shown in this scene.
- Summer in the 1920s – The electric iron, radio, sewing machine, and the light bulb are the topics in this scene.
- Autumn in the 1940s – The automatic dishwasher, electric exercise machine, and television are shown in this scene.
- Winter in the present – Lots of high-tech things in this scene, like video games, high-definition televisions, and voice-activated household appliances.
The reason this attraction is a classic and so special is because it was personally created by Walt Disney for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. The show was a success and was soon moved to Disneyland. Of course, anyone who has been on the Carousel of Progress knows the classic song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” and if you know the song, it’s probably going through your head now. I’ve had it going through my head the whole time I’ve been writing this!
If you’ve been on it recently, you may agree that it needs a bit of a refurbishment. Hopefully, Disney will give it the TLC it deserves soon, without changing the story. It’s become a favorite of mine and I know I’m not alone. I love going into that theater and taking a journey over the last hundred years.
Thanks to everyone who played along this week and congratulations to those that knew where the lamp is located! We’ll play again next Wednesday!
Is Carousel of Progress one of your “must-do” attractions?
Thanks for reading!
