Toy Story Land is officially open and the crowds have descended on Hollywood Studios. If you are not careful, you could end up spending your whole day just waiting in lines. Here are some tips on how to avoid that.
Toy Story Land is only a few days old, so it is still very popular. The crowds are still huge and the wait times are still ridiculous. I’m not just talking about ride wait times, I’m also talking about wait times to get into the land. There are so many people trying to get to Toy Story Land that Disney has limit the number of people going into the new land. So if you’re not careful you could spend time waiting to get into the land and then you have to get on line for one of the rides. Your whole day would be spent waiting in line. That’s not fun for anyone!
My biggest tip for avoiding the long lines is to get there early. Hollywood Studios will have morning Extra Magic Hours (EMH) for Disney Resort hotel guests until August 25. The morning EMH will start at 7 a.m. everyday, so my advice would be to get there no later than 6 a.m. The crowds will probably still be light at that time, but it won’t take long for the crowd to build.
Another tip is to bring as small a bag as you can. I know that’s hard to do if you have little kids. I remember all the stuff we had to pack in the diaper bag, so it’s hard to bring a small bag when you have little kids. If you have to bring a bigger bag, then try to get it as organized as possible, that way you will get through bag check quicker and can get to the entry point faster. If you don’t need to bring a bag then don’t. Disney has a separate line for guests with no bags and it obviously moves much quicker.
Once you are allowed in you are not allowed to run. A lot of people end up power walking, which is fine because it’s not technically running. Try to work your way as close to the front as you can, this will help you get to Slinky Dog Dash quicker. Slinky is a little bit past the Toy Story Mania! entrance on the right. Alien Swirling Saucers is at the end of the land, across from the restrooms. If you want to ride all three rides I would start with Slinky, move to Alien Swirling Saucers next, and finish with Toy Story Mania! as the last in the trifecta. Both days that I was at Toy Story Land Toy Story Mania! was pretty much a walk-on ride, because everyone was in line for Slinky.
Since the crowds are so intense I recommend looking for a FastPass for one of the three rides. The reason is that even if they are making people wait to get into the land, the people with FastPasses will be let in at their FastPass time. I have heard that line can get long too, so make sure to talk to a Cast Member if they are making people wait for their FastPass time so you know where to go.
If you want to get something from Woody’s Lunch Box check out the line first. There are only two podiums for ordering, though there are lines are both sides of the podiums for a total of four lines. However, the lines tend to grow quickly, so if the line is really long then I would hop on the My Disney Experience app and take advantage of the Mobile Order feature. Seating is also limited in this area, so you may have to wait for a table or sit with strangers. I ended up sitting with another solo traveler and two Cast Members that were looking for a table. It was really fun chatting with them all. So don’t be afraid to sit with people you don’t know, it could lead to some good conversation!
Another tip is to make sure you have plenty of water with you. There is very little coverage in the new land, so it can get very hot. Plus, there is no gift shop, only carts with souvenirs. Gift shops are good for getting out of the sun, but you can’t do that in Toy Story Land. So make sure you have water and sunscreen. This will be especially handy if you end up waiting in a long line.
The bottom line is, if you are going to Disney World any time soon, expect big crowds at Toy Story Land. Pandora – The World of Avatar has been open for over a year and Flight of Passage is still a two hour wait, so I don’t see things calming down anytime soon. Plus, Star Wars – Galaxy’s Edge opens next year, which won’t help to lessen the crowds at Hollywood Studios. So definitely plan out your day and try to get to the park an hour before the morning Extra Magic Hours begin, that will be the biggest help for fighting the crowds. Even if Disney buses aren’t running that early you can take a Mears taxi, Lyft, or Uber to get there in time.
One last thing, I know tensions can run high when the lines are long and the days are hot, but don’t take it out on the Cast Members please. They are there to make magic and they are doing the best they can to move the crowds along. Yelling at them will not help and it ruins the day for multiple people. Patience is the key word when it comes to visiting a new section of the park. The Cast Members are working hard and a smile and a thank you can go a long way.
Hope those tips help you when visiting Toy Story Land! When are you going to play in Andy’s backyard?
