There have been lots of announcements coming from Disney World in the last couple of days. The newest one has to do with a complimentary option that has been available to those booking Walt Disney World Resort vacation packages.
In with the announcement about the new Disney Park Pass reservation system, Disney also announced that they will be discontinuing the complimentary MagicBands for guests with package stays beginning January 1, 2021. They are working on a new offering as part of the My Disney Experience app that will basically be your MagicBand without the band. They had already started working on this with the digital key feature on the app, which allows guests to open their room door with their phone. If you are not a fan of using the My Disney Experience app in place of the MagicBand you can still get a Key to the World card to use.
Don’t worry though, MagicBands aren’t going away, they will still be available for purchase. Disney will still be offering guests with vacation packages the option to purchase MagicBands at a discount. Plus, new colors and designs featuring Disney characters will be available in the future.

I’m glad to hear you can still purchase them. We just started our wall of Disney with a magic band hanger as the Center peice, and would be a shame to see them go away, so I couldn’t keep filling it. Plus I love the convenience of needing nothing but my magic band. I would absolutely pay for the band rather than carrying my phone on vacation or a key card.
I agree. My phone battery takes a hit with fast pass searches and pictures without needing it for everything else too. Even though there was not a separate line item charge, the cost of the magic bands were figured in your bill. They were just advertised as free.
Not liking the reservation system and lack of park hopping. Not so sure about some of these changes. Will have to wait and see how things go before we book again.
Ya, I hope things have calmed down by early next year, and some of these things go away. I suspect some of them, though, are here to stay (just hope the change to needing the app for everything isn’t one of them).
We have a large supply of magic bands both that come with package and ones we’ve purchased. Can these bands be programmed when we arrive? Bands have been a great addition to the daily process.
