The newest ride to open in Hollywood Studios is extremely popular with guests arriving as early as 4:30 a.m. to get in line before the park opens. At first, the park was opening earlier than the advertised hours. This allowed guests to get a spot in the virtual queue early, but that has since changed.
Disney has announced the the virtual queue will open with the advertised hours for the park. So, even if guests get there at 4:30 a.m. they won’t be able to grab a spot until the park officially opens. Disney has said that they still may allow guests to enter the park early and limited locations will be open for guests to grab food, drink, or shop for souvenirs. However, the virtual queue will not open early.
At the time of the advertised opening the virtual queue for the ride will open and everyone who is in the park at that time will have a chance to grab a spot. Once a guest gets a boarding group they will get a notification when it’s time to ride. Once the initial boarding groups have been filled Disney will offer backup boarding groups. These backup boarding groups will only be called if the initial groups have been called and there is room for more riders that evening, so there is no guarantee that the backup boarding groups will be called.
The higher the number of the boarding group, the later in the day you will be called to ride. So if you get a higher number you will have time to explore the rest of the park before your group gets called. Disney has some suggestions of things to do while you wait.
You can also take a walk, boat ride, or Skyliner ride over to the BoardWalk or Epcot. There’s plenty to experience near Hollywood Studios while you are waiting for your boarding group to be called.
There’s no word on how long the virtual queue will be used or when/if the FastPass system will be implemented. For now, it’s best to get to the park before the advertised park opening. This gives you enough time to through bag check and through the entrance. That way you can log on right when the park officially opens and grab a spot in the virtual queue.
