Tonga Toast is a pretty popular breakfast option at the Kona Cafe. Each time I go to Kona that is what I get, I just can’t bring myself to order anything else.
Have you heard of Tonga Toast? I remember when I first heard about it and looked up what it was. Once I saw pictures I knew I would be ordering that during our next trip. When it was time to make our dining reservations Kona Cafe was on the list of places to go. You can find Kona Cafe on the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House, which is the Polynesian Village Resort’s main building.
Tonga Toast is a pretty simple, albeit a pretty big, breakfast option at Kona Cafe. It is two thick pieces of sourdough bread, stuffed with banana, fried, and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. The dish is also served with a strawberry compote, syrup, butter, and a choice of ham, bacon, or sausage.
The cinnamon and sugar coating give it a little bit of a crunch on the outside, but the bread and banana make it soft on the inside when you bite into it. Plus, the strawberry compote will soften the bread when you pour it over the top. I like cutting the Tonga Toast in half and letting the strawberry compote drip down the inside. The bread soaks up the strawberry flavor nicely and it’s delicious!
It’s safe to say that this is one of my favorite breakfast options available on Disney property, and Disney has a lot of delicious breakfast options. It’s available at both Kona Cafe and Capt. Cook’s at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Kona Cafe is a table service restaurant, so you can make dining reservations ahead of time, and Capt. Cook’s is a quick service restaurant.
Tonga Toast has a bit of a fan following (like the School Bread from Norway in Epcot) and it’s one of those foods a lot of guests feel the need to try. After having Tonga Toast it was easy to understand why it has a following. It’s one of the those dishes that is always on my list of things to get on each trip.
Have you ever had Tonga Toast?
