The 50’s Prime Time Cafe is a 1950s themed table service restaurant in Hollywood Studios. It’s a fun restaurant and I was excited to visit again after 10 years.
Guests can find the 50’s Prime Time Cafe by Echo Lake in Hollywood Studios. You can’t miss the big spinning sign outside or the theme of the restaurant that extends to its entrance.
This is one of my favorite themed restaurants on Disney World property. The menu is filled with good comfort food and the Cast Members are hysterical, acting as family members and often bickering in the middle of dining areas. It’s a very entertaining place to eat!
The Theme
As I said above, the theme of this restaurant is the 1950s. Basically, you are supposed to be in a home in the 1950s. The waiting area is set up like a family room, complete with furniture and televisions from the 1950s. The televisions play clips from shows from the 1950s. It’s one of the best themed waiting areas on property (in my opinion).
The waiting area is also by the restaurant’s lounge, The Tune-In Lounge. So you can grab a drink while you wait for your table or you can come in for a quick visit and get food in the lounge too.
The dining area is composed of different size table layouts. Seating is mainly chairs, but some tables have half chair seating and half booth seating. The seating too is themed after designs you might have found in a 1950s kitchen. In the dining rooms there are also televisions playing shows from the 1950s and knick knacks and other things you might have found in kitchens in the 1950s. So make sure to look around when you eat here.
I read a post recently where someone said they went to the 50’s Prime Time Cafe and at their table was the same cookie jar that her grandmother had in her kitchen. She remembered that from when she was a little girl. It doesn’t get much more nostalgic than that!
The Food
The menu here is filled with comfort food like fried chicken, meatloaf, and pot roast. Since you are supposed to be eating in a home, a lot of the menu items have a family member’s name attached to it. For instance, I ordered Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried Chicken and it was delicious! Seriously some of the best fried chicken I have had on Disney property.
Other Menu Items Include:
- Mom’s Old-fashioned Pot Roast
- Cousin Megan’s Traditional Meatloaf
- Cousin Harold’s Vegetable Lasagna
- Grandma’s Chicken Pot Pie
- Dad’s Stuffed Pork Chop
- Mom’s Brownie
- Dad’s Favorite Chocolate Peanut Butter Layered Cake
One of the more popular desserts at Prime Time is the Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake. It may not sound appealing, but it gets rave reviews from many people.
If you are looking for an alcoholic beverage you can get something from Dad’s Liquor Cabinet or you can get one of Dad’s Cocktails. They also serve wine and beer.
One thing I was disappointed about is that they no longer show the dessert menu on a View Finder. Again, it’s been 10 years since the last time I was there, so that change might have happened a while ago.
The Cast Members
The Cast Members at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe are definitely part of the experience at the restaurant. It starts when your table is ready and they yell out your last name like they are calling kids in for dinner (Smith kids your table is ready!). Your waiter or waitress will refer to themselves as a cousin, aunt, uncle, ect. and they’ll usually end up bickering with each other in the middle of the dining room.
When you are seated at the table you are given utensils and napkins to set the table yourself. Speaking of the table, make sure to keep your elbows off the table. Proper table etiquette is expected in this house. They will also expect you to eat all your vegetables. Who knows, you might become a member of the “Clean Plate Club.”
Each time I have eaten at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe the Cast Members have been awesome. They play their family member parts so well and they are a big reason why this is such a popular restaurant.
Do I Recommend Eating Here?
Absolutely! The food is good, the theming is fun, and the Cast Members are awesome. The only time I would say not to go there is if you have someone in your party who does not enjoy being a part of the experience. Some people like to eat their meal with their family and friends, but don’t really want to take part in the improv that happens at restaurants like this. That is perfectly fine, but then they might not really enjoy eating here.
Other than that, I would say that if you haven’t made reservations at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe you should put it on your reservation list for your next visit to Hollywood Studios. You can’t go wrong with good food, entertaining service, and fun theming!
Have you ever eaten at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe?
